Safety

AVOID transporting dry ice in the cab of a truck or the passenger compartment of a car. If this is not possible, the load should be well insulated and adequate ventilation maintained.

IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, transport dry ice in vehicles where the driver’s cab is isolated from the load compartment.

ALWAYS ensure there is adequate ventilation  during transportation and before entering the load compartment.

In certain conditions dry ice sublimes from its current state into carbon dioxide, which carries a danger of asphyxiation. These conditions can include changes in the ambient temperature and humidity, the quality of the storage container, even the number of times the container is opened and closed. The better the insulation, the slower the sublimation rate and the longer the quality of the dry ice product will be maintained. ALWAYS store dry ice in a properly designed container. ALWAYS keep the container lid closed when not in use. ALWAYS secure the container lid open before reaching in to unload the product. Avoid leaning into the container for longer than necessary.
  • DO NOT store dry ice in any gas tight container. Within large containers, gas atmospheres will have built up.
  • DO NOT expose dry ice to high ambient temperatures unnecessarily, as this increases the sublimation rate.
  • DO NOT store in cellars or unventilated rooms.
ALWAYS Ensure adequate low level ventilation wherever dry ice is stored.
Avoid storing dry ice in inadequately ventilated enclosed locations. CO2 is approximately 1.5 times denser than air. Therefore, it can replace oxygen in compact or confined places. If a little chunk of dry ice sublimes fast, it can create a considerable amount of CO2 gas.  The problem is that at high amounts, CO2 may also be poisonous. It may cause someone to cease breathing and to lose consciousness.
It’s very importantly, do not allow children and animals around dry ice. The dry ice can be very dangerous to touch, eat, drink, and breathe in (the vapors from dry ice fog/clouds).
Contact involving dry ice can result in frostbite and ice burn. In case of dry ice encounter injuries, the following first aid procedures are recommended:
  • Seek medical attention as soon as possible.
  • Take off any clothes that had contact with dry ice, in order not frozen to the skin.
  • Immerse the afflicted body part in warm water (nothing hotter than 40° C).
  • Avoid using dry heat to heat the space.
  • Avoid rubbing the afflicted region.
Letting dry ice dissolve at room temperature is indeed an effective approach to dispose of it. However, some measures must be taken to avoid risks.
  • Allow dry ice to dissolve only in well-ventilated spaces to avoid hazardous CO2 accumulation.
  • Never let dry ice alone in public.
  • Never put dry ice down the toilet, sink, or garbage disposal. Intense cold can cause damage to plumbing.
  • Never put dry ice in a garbage can.
  • Do not place dry ice straight on tile and laminate surfaces. The cold can lead to deterioration of the adhesives and cause them to fracture

FAQ

Dry ice blasting is a cleaning method that uses compressed air to propel dry ice pellets at high speeds onto surfaces. The dry ice pellets sublimate upon impact, creating a powerful cleaning action that removes contaminants without leaving behind residues or causing damage to the surface.

Dry ice blasting can be used on a wide range of surfaces, including metal, plastic, wood, glass, concrete, and more. It is suitable for delicate surfaces and intricate equipment due to its non-abrasive nature.

Dry ice blasting offers numerous advantages, such as non-abrasive cleaning, residue-free results, non-toxic process, reduced downtime, environmental friendliness (no secondary waste), and the ability to clean hard-to-reach areas.

Dry ice blasting can effectively remove various contaminants, including dirt, grease, oil, adhesives, paints, coatings, rust, mold, mildew, and other surface residues.

Dry ice blasting is a safe cleaning method when performed by trained professionals following appropriate safety guidelines. It does not involve the use of chemicals, and the process is non-conductive and non-toxic.

Dry ice blasting is a non-abrasive cleaning method that does not damage most surfaces or equipment. However, it is essential to consider the specific requirements of the surface being cleaned and adjust the pressure and distance accordingly to avoid any potential damage.

The duration of a dry ice blasting service depends on various factors, such as the size of the area to be cleaned, the complexity of the surfaces, and the extent of the contamination. Smaller jobs can be completed in a few hours, while larger projects may take several days.

Depending on the specific project, preparations may include clearing the area, protecting sensitive equipment, and ensuring proper ventilation. The dry ice blasting service provider will provide guidance on any necessary preparations.
